Rim brakes builds have been decreasing since the past two years, but we would like to think that they ride differently compared to a disc brake bike. They are also less problematic when it comes to preparing your bike for an overseas trip or troubleshooting issues while on the road.

What we have here is a beautiful Cicli Bonanno nicely done up with curated parts by the owner. We managed to dig out the story behind his choice of builder and why such a build!

CPS : Why a steel build?

WeiJie : Although I have owned several carbon and aluminium bikes over the years, I have never owned or ridden a steel bike. With fit issues coming off my previous bike, I decided to take this opportunity to get a custom fit with Fitskuul and get into the steel bike game.

CPS : Why a rim brake build?

WeiJie : I have been after an all-rounder steel rim brake frame as there is just something classic about the feel of rim brakes and mechanical shifting which I personally felt, has a good balance between weight, handling, and comfort.

CPS : We love rim brakes builds still! Why Cicli Bonanno out of many other builders out there?

WeiJie : I was introduced to Bonanno by CPS while in the hunt for a builder. While there are many builders that can build a custom steel bike, the attention to detail of Bonanno stood out to me. There is this special element of beauty in Bonanno’s approach, and in particular, the model Futomaki.

CPS : A very interesting colour choice, can you tell us more about it?

WeiJie : Since the build is a full custom, I naturally went with me and my wife’s favourite colour combination - green and pink. Inspired by a couple of rare Porsche colours, I chose an olive metallic colour as the base with a contrasting pearl pink metallic for the logos. Velociao who helped Bonanno with all their paintwork, nailed it with the paint job. It is absolutely gorgeous under bright sunlight.

CPS : Gorgeous. Would you like to share what was the consideration towards pairing the frameset up with?

WeiJie : Aesthetically, I thought that the bike was built with colours and as such, went with components that would compliment it yet, not outshining the frame colourway.  The components were slowly chosen out while I was waiting for the frameset. The eventual build was a mechanical Campagnolo Record groupset, matched with components from Darimo, Chris King, Cane Creek, and a Campagnolo wheelset.

CPS : Lovely selection indeed. Would you like to share how has the ride been?

WeiJie : The bike has been with me for awhile now and I am glad to give my feedback that it has been probably the best bike that I have ridden thus far. It might not be the most lightweight or aero bike that I have owned, but it has the best balance of what is needed to go on long rides, yet being able to pick up the pace when I want it to.

CPS : What a delight it is for us to hear this! Anything else you would like to share to our audience?

WeiJie : YES! Thank you to CPS team and Fitskuul for this dream steel bike build!
