Mr M's Bastion Superleggera
With many bicycle framesets that were released over the past two years with improved technology and manufacturing processes, Bastion often caught the eyes of many who are looking for more than just another new bike.
Being one of the first companies to demonstrate how metal additive manufacturing could be used to customize and produce bicycle frames, Bastion has been known for their titanium 3D printed lugs and engineering that has constantly push the boundaries of modern bicycle.
The Superleggera was designed to be super light, comfortable without compromising power transfer, handling and the ride quality that Bastion is known for. It is also the lightest frame out of the company's lineup,
This Superleggera was recently done up and we found the choice of colourway and components to be an interesting choice. We caught up with the owner to understand his decision on purchasing a Bastion and the reason behind building up the way it is.
CPS : Hello Mr M, would you like to share what made you pulled the trigger on your Bastion as compared to other frame companies?
Mr M : The engineering history of Bastion that they put into their work enticed. me greatly and the company's slogan "Engineering a new art form" is just impeccable! In addition, the possibility of a custom geometry for a new bike of my own adds the extra deciding factor.
CPS : Indeed, we agree that the availability of custom geometry is a strong pulling factor given the price of mass-produced framesets are retailing at these days. Are you able to share the choice of such an interesting colourway?
Mr M : Fitskuul who helped me with my custom geometry and bikefitting, gave me some ideas and I was inspired by the Mandalorian Armour in Star Wars. That made me decide on the raw finish for the 3D printed titanium lugs which I wanted it to look like the armour plates. The red tubes and blue finish are the uniform that are under the armour.
CPS : We like the colourway inspiration and that the end result turns out really aesthetically pleasing. The choice of the groupset is an interesting one, given how many shunned away in favour of Shimano / Sram. Can you tell us the why did you decide to go with Campagnolo?
Mr M : The history, heritage and culture of Campagnolo were the pulling factors. The story is just great.
CPS : The story of Campagnolo is indeed alluring. Was that also the reason why you decided on the wheelset for this build?
Mr M : The Bora Ultra 45 C23 wheelset was decided due to the depth of rim when the terrain of Singapore was factored in. I found Campagnolo hubs to be buttery smooth and in my opinion, the wheelset is one of the better looking wheelset in the market that are still using hooked rims. Hookless rims has had quite a few accidents lately on the UCI world tour circuit.
CPS : Great choice! We think that the wheelset matches really well with the whole aesthetic of the build as well. Given that it has been a few weeks since its completion now, how has the ride of the Superleggera been for you?
Mr M : The bike holds speed well and the rides have been really comfortable for me which I do not feel any discomfort at all for my long rides.
