A Sergio Green Platypus brought to life with silver classics and purposeful hits of purple.

Some builds are about performance. Others are about how a bike fits into everyday life.

Lucas came back to us with a clear intention, to build a bike he could use for daily errands, supermarket runs, and more importantly, to ride with his son.

Something practical. Something dependable.
But still unmistakably his.

The starting point was a Rivendell Platypus. A frame known for its versatility. Designed to handle just about anything, from road riding to commuting and light touring, with clearance for up to 50mm tyres, it made perfect sense as the foundation for a do-it-all bike.

Lucas had already chosen a beautiful Sergio Green frameset, and from there, the direction became clear.

He had come across a build featuring purple components, and that idea stuck. Against the richness of Sergio Green, the contrast felt just right. Subtle at first glance, but striking when the details reveal themselves.

The approach was simple. Build the foundation in classical silver, and let the purple accents do the talking.

Naturally, the headset choice followed. A Chris King headset came to mind almost immediately , and in the 3D Violet colourway, it became an easy decision. Set against the green frame, it acts as a quiet focal point. A small detail that anchors the entire palette.

From the cockpit, Lucas was set on bar-end shifters, keeping things simple, tactile, and in line with the Platypus’ timeless character.

The build initially started with a modest budget in mind. But as the process evolved, and being a fan of well-machined components, Lucas chose to invest in the details, the kind you notice both visually and in use.

Paul Components brakes, finished in purple, became a defining feature. Precision-machined, functional, and adding just the right amount of contrast without overwhelming the build.

To balance it out, a Blue Lug YWC crankset was selected, bringing a subtle vintage touch in silver that grounds the overall aesthetic.

Details like Sim Works Nissen brake and shifter housing added another layer of refinement. Not just functional, but an opportunity to introduce colour in a controlled, intentional way.

Up front, the Velo Orange porteur rack completes the picture. Practical for everyday use, visually aligned with the build, and exactly how Lucas imagined carrying what he needs, whether it is groceries or daily essentials.

The result is a commuter that feels cohesive from every angle.

A Platypus built for everything. Errands, rides around the neighbourhood, and moments spent with his son. Practical at its core, but elevated through thoughtful details and a clear visual direction.

And most importantly, a build that Lucas is genuinely happy with.
