It has been awhile since we did a really nice commuter aside from the road builds and we were all excited when one of our old friend came back to us to put together a Sklar Super Something!
Sklar Bikes first surfaced back in 2014 and the owner Adam Sklar is very passionate with custom and hand-built bicycles which over the years since 2014 has seem him shifted the focus to built-to-order non-custom models. The primary reason for that was the observation he has gathered since 2014 to 2019 on what customers wanted.
Martin's approach towards the build was simple. He wanted to build his Super Something as a commuter that he can use to commute to work on a daily basis and to be able to go onto different terrain without much concern on the tyre grip etc.
We propose for the overall aesthetics to be something classy and will look just fine in years to come which Martin agreed with. Silver components and parts were identified. For the wheelset, a strong and sturdy wheelset is needed given that we wanted the wheel to stay true and also not to give any issue to Martin throughout his commuting use.
For the wheelset, we opted for the trusted White Industries CLD hubset for its reliability and performance. Coupled with the Velocity Blunt SS rims and the Sapim Race spokes, the wheelset should be sturdy for any kind of terrain and stay true for a good period of time!
Martin had a very interesting choice of crankset which he had gotten ready for the build. The
Engin Port Royal crankset is hardly seen here in Singapore and is built to withstand abuse and designed to be ridden hard. The look of the crankset is classic and we like how it looks and still using modern technology as well.
We wanted a boxy stem at the front and the
Paul Components Boxcar Stem came to mind. Paul Components has been manufacturing very nice components and they came in polished finish as well which fitted just fine to what we hope to acheive for aesthetics.
With the stem being Paul Component, the seatpost had to be from the same manufacturer as well. The
Tall and Handsome seatpost was an amazing choice to go with this commuter in our opinon.
With the bike being set up as a commuter, Martin had originally opted for the Paul Component Klamper disc caliper but changed his mind to the Japanese made
Growtac Equal Brake Caliper. The Growtac has been garnering alot of good reviews worldwide and offer superb braking as well as modulation on its levers. A better alternative to the Klamper from our point of view!
The bike was done up with a 1x setup at the front and with a 11-42 cassette at the back, Martin can go into trails as well on weekends whenever he is in the mood. Overall we are happy with how it turned out and certainly hope Martin is as well.
Thanks Martin!
